If you are looking for a Lanmaoa asiatica grow kit, the short answer is that a working one does not exist. This is not a supply problem. It comes from how this mushroom lives.
Why Lanmaoa asiatica cannot be grown from a kit
Grow kits work for mushrooms that feed on dead material: oyster mushrooms on straw, shiitake and lion’s mane on sawdust. You give the fungus food and humidity and it fruits.
Lanmaoa asiatica is different. It is ectomycorrhizal: its threads wrap around the fine roots of living pine trees, mainly Yunnan pine (Pinus yunnanensis). The tree gives the fungus sugars, the fungus gives the tree water and minerals, and the mushroom only appears when that partnership is established and the rainy season arrives. A bag of substrate on a kitchen counter cannot replace a living pine.
The same rule applies to porcini, chanterelles and matsutake. All of them are sold every year, and all of them are still picked in the wild, because decades of attempts have not produced reliable commercial cultivation. No published study has reported Lanmaoa asiatica fruiting in cultivation.
What is being sold as a “grow kit”
Listings that use the name usually fall into one of three groups:
- A different species. Often an easy saprotrophic mushroom with a Lanmaoa name attached for search traffic.
- Spores or “liquid culture” with no proof of identity. Even genuine spores will not fruit without a host tree, and without DNA identification you cannot know what the syringe contains.
- Tree inoculation offers. Inoculating pine seedlings with an ectomycorrhizal fungus is a real forestry technique, but it takes years, needs the right climate, and has no guaranteed harvest. It is not a kit.
If a seller claims a kit produces Lanmaoa asiatica, ask for photographs of fruiting bodies grown from it and for a DNA sequence of the culture. We have not seen a seller who can provide both.
